Zohran Mamdani confirms his intention to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his victory in November.
"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its vibrant immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
But his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his modest Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
