The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
