The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
