Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it's understandable for questions to be raised about his future following a further heavy loss against the Dutch champions.
The Reds suffered their 9th defeat in twelve matches, representing the club's worst run since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I have got plenty of backing from above,” Slot stated.
“It would be great to reverse this trend and earn three points naturally but when you're coaching a team and struggling then it is normal that people question you.”
He added, “I am OK with my situation. It is not the first time I’ve been in a challenging situation but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to expand on his dialogues with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me constantly each day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “Through standard conversations we have I feel the confidence. However I've not talked to them after this match so far so let’s see.”
Persistent Problems and Squad Response
Slot highlighted recurring shortcomings from his team in their Champions League defeat, namely poor finishing and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was blunter in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I'm telling that to everybody,” Jones stated.
“It's simply not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a spell of this nature with results like these.”
Jones finished, “But we continue to wear the crest on our chest. And until that badge is taken away, we'll continue to battle.”
“We will attempt to help the side back to its rightful place, prove again what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
