The Evolution of a Movement is often marked by specific steps.

1. The Grand Vision

A dominant personality or leaders introduce a new and transcendent idea that promises a panacea for struggling players.

Thus we find ourselves. Preparations are underway to challenge the establishment down in Brisbane. The gunships are circling. Signs of trouble appear from within. A lone figure, vulnerable, shivering, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT smeared across his chest as a statement, has emerged from the field and is being led away with discretion to a different team elsewhere.

Remember the start, when everything was fresh? The initial phase, of pure instinct.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Team architects offer a new start, a brighter tomorrow, support, salvation together united in belief in the big idea.

What did it represent initially? Players celebrating enjoying success. Body art. Muscles. Determination. Elite male wellness energy. Admittedly, The squad insist they don’t use the label, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what was that spectacle?

Yet it’s clear its essence. It’s the batsman executing a stroke so outrageous it defies description. It’s the excitement of the leader in his final form, an expression conveying: pensive Nordic god, rugged appearance, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you half-expect to glance over and see him playing at mid-off stripped to the waist embracing nature.

It’s the opener often seen to talk in press conferences, appearing as a cheerful animal formally attired, uttering phrases such as we are actively deconstructing the orange. Certainly, the vibe, for a significant period, was uplifting.

3. The Growth Phase

Development stage. Cohesion maintained through repetition of the cult’s slogans. These principles are often illogical as a loyalty check.

Am I alone? The reaction, the outrage, the feeling of letdown after the first Ashes Test defeat feels overblown, too much. The performance was poor in Perth, as history shows. They were dominated while bowling in a short span as plans unraveled, manipulated by the opponent imitating their style effectively, adaptive to conditions, a performer excelling with brilliance.

Now there is the criticism, the anger, the perception of the team as a failure. The feeling seems to be that defeat must be total, they need to lose righteously, to be purged, obliterated, overwhelmed by the vengeful purity of the pace attack, the low-fi orthodoxies of the veteran, marking achievements with a bashful smile similar to getting a pleasant gift. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Problems arise due to setbacks. Yet, mistakes are denied. It begins to thrive on hostility externally.

Ultimately, approaching the upcoming game, we are at an intriguing moment in the journey of this movement. They might succeed in the next Test through aggressive play. Alternatively, failure may follow. Should they fail it seems we may see the final stage.

Prior to that, a couple of points worth saying on the topic. In the past, back in those heady early days, of passion and hope, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. Criticism followed, which proved the point since it’s clear how to confirm lack of cult status is if supporters send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.

The developments recently are fascinating. Criticism of the approach has now become the cult. Online outrage is widespread, critical analysts, images of frustrated travelling fans missing out on play, similar to investors demanding recourse.

Conversely, exists the larger scene of the host’s complex more culturally hard-wired exasperation with the aggressive tourists, out there saying, the methods you value and have fostered and nurtured to distinguish yourselves from the opposition, well, it’s all a bit of a gag after all.

Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. Bazball was a cult since the sport itself is insular. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a circle, an elite gathering, a restricted environment with a long history of ceremonial past behind it. This has always been where entry is limited. It’s the imperial sport of the nation, the early image-makers. And guess what, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The team have been enclosed in this system for years. Attempting to break free, to foster positivity, they are simply replicating their past, forming a new circle, an exclusive group, however with a modern squad and a coach promoting authenticity as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.

Live where your feet are. Confront risks. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
