Meteorologists are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are set to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are due to be low, meaning extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Travelers have been urged to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Readings Expected to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Released

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this signified the weather was expected to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This involves a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in security, wrapping up warm is completely key.
