Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new acronym came to light several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is found only in Gaza, according to health professionals like paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that violations are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
