Detonations and Low-Flying Aircraft Reported in Venezuelan Capital Caracas

Witness testimonies surfaced of numerous detonations and the noise of low-flying planes in the Venezuelan capital in the small hours of Saturday morning. This incident has led to allegations from the Venezuelan government and requests for diplomatic intervention.

Venezuela Blames United States of Military Action

Venezuela's authoritarian administration has condemned the Washington of what it calls "foreign aggression," alleging that former President Donald Trump allegedly directed attacks against the Latin American country. In an public statement, the authorities stated that strikes had hit the capital and three other regions: Miranda, La Guaira state, and Aragua.

"Our only objective of this attack is to seize control of Venezuela's natural resources, in particular its petroleum and minerals," the statement asserted.

Venezuelan officials urged the international community to censure the strikes, which it termed a "blatant breach of international norms" that placed numerous of lives in danger.

Reports of Blasts and Military Sites Hit

Eyewitnesses described hearing at least several explosions around 2:00 AM in the morning. Citizens in different districts allegedly rushed into the streets.

"The earth trembled. It was frightening. We experienced blasts and planes in the distance," stated one resident.

Black smoke was reported pouring from major defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota air base and the Fuerte Tiuna military base, where president Nicolás Maduro is believed to live.

Regional Condemnation

The president of bordering Colombia, wrote on social media that "At this moment they are striking Caracas... attacking it with missiles." He requested an swift emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

The Colombian government, which just joined the Security Council, said it would activate defense measures at its shared border with its neighbor.

Preceding Events

The reported attacks are preceded by a months-long military buildup by the US against the Maduro administration. Beginning in August, there has been a substantial US military deployment off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a series of air strikes on vessels suspected of narco-trafficking.

Venezuela's government has stated "the implementation of emergency" and commanded all defense measures to be initiated. It has also called on its political forces to protest and "reject this imperialist aggression."

American officials and the US Department of Defense have not publicly commented on inquiries for a statement regarding the allegations.
