Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
