A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
